Quarters Set in Southern Conference



Asheville, N.C. - The top four seeds have been waiting to get into action after receiving a bye at the Southern Conference Tournament. The quarterfinals are now set for Saturday as Georgia Southern, Furman, UNC Greensboro and Western Carolina have advanced.

The underdogs won 3 of the 4 games in Friday's first round.

Georgia Southern had no problems with Wofford, as the 9th seed took out the 8th seed by a score of 60-44. Eric Ferguson had 17 points to lead the Eagles to the win. Georgia Southern trailed 18-16 before closing the first half on a 14-0 run and they never looked back. They will face the top seeded Davidson Wildcats on Saturday.

1)Davidson vs. 9)Georgia Southern  12pm

In the second game of the day, Furman upset Samford 55-51 in a game that was close all the way. The largest lead for either team was 6 held by Samford. Bobby Austin had 17 points to lead the Paladins. It is the third straight year that Furman has defeated Samford in the first round. They will face 4th seed, Appalachian State on Saturday.

4)Appalachian State vs. 12)Furman  2pm

UNC Greensboro outscored 7th seed Chattanooga 55-38 in the second half and came back from an 11 point halftime deficit to advance, 87-81. Senior, Derrell Armstong had 25 points on the day to go with 8 rebounds to pace the Spartans to victory. They move on to meet 2nd seed, Elon on Saturday.

2)Elon vs. 10)UNC Greensboro  6pm

In the final game on Friday, Western Carolina held The Citadel at arms length to advance past the Bulldogs 76-61. Trey Sumler had a huge game, pouring in 27 points in the contest. The Catamounts move on to face College of Charleston in the quarters on Saturday.
